I pray that you had a fun and safe Christmas and New Year. This past year we saw too many of us maimed or killed while riding our motorcycles. Let’s start this new year proactively and do our best to have a safer year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published a study on motorcycle fatalities. NHSTA listed the number one cause of motorcycle fatalities being the driver failing to yield the right of way (ROW) to the motorcyclist. In an effort to decrease the fatalities from ROW violations ABATE of Georgia, Inc. is taking a three prong approach. First, we are trying to educate the public that we, the motorcyclists, use the highways too and the public should look for us. The most common excuse given when a driver fails to yield the right of way to motorcyclists causing a crash is “I didn’t see him”. We have a driver awareness program called “Share the Road” where we give lifesaving driving tips to motorists who don’t ordinarily look for motorcyclists on the road. Our second approach is to legislate stiffer penalties against those who maim or kill a motorcyclist by failing to yield the right of way. In 2006 we had the fine increased from $25 to $250. This year we are pushing to make that penalty higher. Thirdly, we are encouraging bikers, old and new, to get better trained in accident avoidance. Additional experienced rider training will save a life. Many crashes can be avoided with the right training. ABATE District 6 has members that meet on a regular basis to practice skills learned from Motorman’s “Ride Like a Pro” video. It is time well spent! ABATE of Georgia, Inc. needs your help to accomplish these goals. We are a volunteer organization and I’m sure you wouldn’t mind giving a couple hours of your time to help save someone’s life. It is much better time spent than a couple hours at someone’s gravesite! All too often we don’t hear from people until they get a ticket or have been in a crash. Please get involved before you become a victim. Visit us on the web at www.abatega.org or give us a call (866) 867-5063. RIDE SAFE, RIDE FREE, AND RIDE OFTEN IN THIS GOD BLESSED U. S. OF A. !!! |
