ROADKILL

Penguin Drive-In

So the spring has proven itself to be a busy time for the Road Kill Crew.  I have spent several waking mornings in hotels worldwide over the course of 2 to 3 months from Bangkok, Thailand to Washington DC.  However, during one recent stay in Charlotte, not too far from the ATL, I was working late and just needed a place that “fits” me and gets me out of the daily “rat race”.  The chef I was working with knew of just the place.  He said to me “you go in and it’s not fancy, you may have to wait a bit but they have ice cold PBR and $1 Yuengling on draft or $5 pitchers”.
Those of you who don’t know, Yuengling is the oldest brewery in America and it is not to be expensive.  So those who are paying a premium for this beer, you are sadly mistaken and getting ripped off!

Anyway, I found this joint and it is just that, a small old ice cream parlor from 1954 converted some time in the 70’s and 80’s into a BBQ house serving up some intense tasties at a huge value!  In 2000, the new owners did some revamping and now you can see the “BIRD”, as the locals call it, with a huge following and great success.
I started out with a basket of fried pickles as I met some locals.  Then I got a BIG BLOCK burger, southern style which is topped with chili and cole slaw, and some sweet potato fries.  Lastly, I took home some house made banana pudding.  These guys were packed!!  They had everything on the menu from Dogs, Burgers, and Brunswick Stew to BBQ Plates of good old NC style pork made daily straight from Shuttletown, NC.  Be sure to check it out at 1921 Commonwealth Avenue, Charlotte NC. 704-375-6959
C’mon folks, lets get on our bikes and go for a ride!  It’s all about “Real Food for Real People”.
